Caesarean Awareness Month
The moment my first baby was born should have been an unforgettable, magical moment instead it was a caesarean birth I never imagined I would have, surrounded by shock and strangers.
I went into pregnancy assuming that birth would just ‘happen’ naturally without realising that birth, especially physiological birth, needs preparation, understanding, and support.
In March 2021, when my son was born, the caesarean rate at our hospital was 39%, among my friends, it was even higher at 50%, and the current UK rate is 42%.
A caesarean is absolutely life-saving when needed and I will always be grateful for it. However, major abdominal surgery is no joke. The impact on my postpartum recovery, my milk supply, my energy, and my mental health was profound.
When I went into my first birth, all I felt was fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the intensity of my contractions, fear of what was happening to my body.
Then with my second birth, after real preparation, all I felt was focus. Even through the intensity, I knew what was happening, I trusted my body, and I felt powerful.
It was only after my VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) that I truly understood how much the right preparation, education, and mindset could change everything.
Now, through my antenatal and hypnobirthing classes I want to equip women with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to give themselves the very best chance at a natural, physiological birth and whatever path their birth takes, to feel empowered, informed, and supported every step of the way.
